This is a hair puller for sure. I'll have to think about this one. While you have the head off, you might want to pull the valves on #2 and #3 and look at the seats and valves. Compression should be around 90 on all 4 for an older engine. Had you checked the valve stem clearances for .017 anywhere along the line? What kind of oil pressure did you have while it was running the previous days?
