Most M's except the very early ones i.e. 39's and some 40's..had either 11 inch or 12 inch rims and they came with either 11-38's or 12-38's. The 11 inch rims have one step on each side af center and taper up to the tire diameter, the 12 inch rims have 2 steps. 13.6's are max width for the 11 inch rims, 14.9's the max for the 12 inch. Actually 12.4's are "right" for the narrower rims and 13.6's for the 12 inch...but you can "fudge a little" and go the wider size without them looking too funny. Don't try to put 15.5's on either rim, they'll looks so pinched in it it's "just wrong". If you put cheap smaller tires on your M to save a few bucks, bear in mind it won't look right with it's front higher than the rear. M's are a handsome husky looking tractor with the right size rear tires on them. With small rear tires they look "heavy nosed" and that just ain't right.
