Tractor tires info

I bought a Farmall M that has some ratty tires on it.

They're 12.4X38's. Can I go with a wider tire? IE 13.6x38 or 15.5X38 on the same rim?

Thanks!

I put 14.9s on my H because that was what I had. The wider tires will increase your speed a little in all gears, but they may also help with traction and flotation.

most likely you have 10" rims on your M. you can go to 13.6's they fit ok on those rims anything larger and they become really pinched. if you want to run a 15.5 you need at least 12" really 14" rim is better yet. I would either stick with the 12.4's or you can opt for the 13.6's not to bad a fit.

I have a tractor with 15.5 tires on 14" rims. Have a real nice pair of 14.9 tires. Would the 14.9's look and perform okay on 14" rims?

14.9's look good on either 12" or 14" rims, there really designed for a 13" rim but that no longer exist for them.,

One thing to consider, 12.4x38s are going to be significantly less expensive than 14.9s or 15.5s.

I put new 13.6's and new standard size rimes on my MD. They look and work well. I inquired about 14.9's , but they are quite a hike in price.

I would like to know the site he used as well! I think my H and MD would be getting new skins!

I know www.nebraskatire.com is very good.

Most M's except the very early ones i.e. 39's and some 40's..had either 11 inch or 12 inch rims and they came with either 11-38's or 12-38's. The 11 inch rims have one step on each side af center and taper up to the tire diameter, the 12 inch rims have 2 steps. 13.6's are max width for the 11 inch rims, 14.9's the max for the 12 inch. Actually 12.4's are "right" for the narrower rims and 13.6's for the 12 inch...but you can "fudge a little" and go the wider size without them looking too funny. Don't try to put 15.5's on either rim, they'll looks so pinched in it it's "just wrong". If you put cheap smaller tires on your M to save a few bucks, bear in mind it won't look right with it's front higher than the rear. M's are a handsome husky looking tractor with the right size rear tires on them. With small rear tires they look "heavy nosed" and that just ain't right.
