Open center vs. closed center is very important.

Really, it means "open WHEN centerED," as in, the flow through the valve is open when the lever is in the center position. Hydraulic oil can flow through the valve freely.

"Closed WHEN centerED" on the other hand, the valve does not allow oil to flow through it when the lever is in the center position. If you use one of these valves on an open center system, the oil will back up and cause damage to the system.

All the old Farmalls have an open center system. The oil circulates through the pipes at low pressure all the time until a lever is pulled. When the lever is pulled, pressure builds and the hydraulic cylinder moves. Advantage here is simplicity.

A closed center system keeps the oil in a pressurized accumulator, and it only flows when the lever is pulled. Advantage here is the capability for higher pressures, and instant response. It also allows multiple valves to operate at once.
