If it is a volt meter, it only goes one way from zero to 20 or so. if an amp meter it will have zero in the middle, and charge to the right, discharge to the left. The big wire from the alternator should go to the load side of the amp meter. (not volt meter) This will be the same side that the light switch is attached to. The other side of the amp meter is connected to the battery positive. It can be at either end of the positive battery cable. it is often easiest to connect it where the +bat cable attaches to the starter switch. It will be a large stud and nut, requiring a big terminal ring to connect, but there is less corrosion and chance of short there. If the lights (with engine off) make the amp gauge move to charge (right), the amp gauge needs to be rewired with all the wires from each post moved to the other. JimN
