A generator shot and was off a Chrysler

When I changed my H over to 12 volts with alt. instead of gen no big deal. I have tried in past post to find conversion of A to 12 volt with alt. I am probably blind but I cant find a post. How does this work with the pos. ground. mag ignition. Thought about just buying a 6volt battery tender and not worrying about it.

The Magneto is not connected to the charging system, it is self contained and does not care whether the battery is + or - ground.

So am I right to run 1wire from the alt. to volt. meter than volt meter to the bolt on starter with battery cable. Or should the wire run from volt meter to the positive term. on the battery. This is were I am confused. Thanks

do not connect to the starter post because when the alt. energizes it will probably cause your starter to run continuously.Go from the volt meter directly to your pos. terminal on your battery.

If it is a volt meter, it only goes one way from zero to 20 or so. if an amp meter it will have zero in the middle, and charge to the right, discharge to the left. The big wire from the alternator should go to the load side of the amp meter. (not volt meter) This will be the same side that the light switch is attached to. The other side of the amp meter is connected to the battery positive. It can be at either end of the positive battery cable. it is often easiest to connect it where the +bat cable attaches to the starter switch. It will be a large stud and nut, requiring a big terminal ring to connect, but there is less corrosion and chance of short there.
If the lights (with engine off) make the amp gauge move to charge (right), the amp gauge needs to be rewired with all the wires from each post moved to the other. JimN

Youre talking now abut an A, right? It should make no difference in operation. Electrically, it's just a choice between which end of the starter cable you're hooking to. For convenience and reliability, it's easier and more secure to put an eye on the end of your wire from the ammeter and hook it up on the hot stud of the starter, than it would be to cobble something onto a plain cable terminal at the battery end, and have it exposed to corrosion.

Hooking to the starter end is what I'd recommend. It will NOT cause your starter to spin while charging. The stud on the starter that the battery cable and wire to the ammeter is on top of the switch assembly. As long as the swtich is working properly, current from anywhere can only get to the starter motor when the button is depressed.
