I worked on them today with a friend of mine who has helped me a lot so far. We worked in the space without pulling the hydraulic pump, and managed to do fine. One of the gaskets I received was completely the wrong one, so we made a gasket out of a cereal box. :lol: He swears by it, so I'll have to trust it, plus the plenty of gasket sealer we used.
When I drained what was left of the tranny fluid (roughly a gallon was all that was in there) I noticed the PTO was leaking. So I pulled it apart and saw that it's seal and gasket were much like the others. So I'll be ordering those. I'll also do the seal in the Belt Pully while I'm at it.
Should I pull the brakes and check those? I'm worried I'd be biting off a lot if those are bad.
Anyway, here's my questions:
1) The tranny oil that came out was pretty dark, with some milky stuff at the very bottom. Not all of it came out. Should I get a few gallons of kerosene and work that through before putting the new oil in, or will the new oil be fine mixed in with a little of the old stuff, and whatever sludge is left in there?
2) When I (someday) break this tractor down to blast it and paint it, I'll be draining the oil out again for a deep clean and bearing/seal inspection/replacement. Will the oil I drain out be reusablable, or will I have throw another $75 into new oil? I'm hoping for less than a year of minimal use before I can paint.
