Tranny seals

I worked on them today with a friend of mine who has helped me a lot so far. We worked in the space without pulling the hydraulic pump, and managed to do fine. One of the gaskets I received was completely the wrong one, so we made a gasket out of a cereal box. He swears by it, so I'll have to trust it, plus the plenty of gasket sealer we used.

When I drained what was left of the tranny fluid (roughly a gallon was all that was in there) I noticed the PTO was leaking. So I pulled it apart and saw that it's seal and gasket were much like the others. So I'll be ordering those. I'll also do the seal in the Belt Pully while I'm at it.

Should I pull the brakes and check those? I'm worried I'd be biting off a lot if those are bad.

Anyway, here's my questions:

1) The tranny oil that came out was pretty dark, with some milky stuff at the very bottom. Not all of it came out. Should I get a few gallons of kerosene and work that through before putting the new oil in, or will the new oil be fine mixed in with a little of the old stuff, and whatever sludge is left in there?

2) When I (someday) break this tractor down to blast it and paint it, I'll be draining the oil out again for a deep clean and bearing/seal inspection/replacement. Will the oil I drain out be reusablable, or will I have throw another $75 into new oil? I'm hoping for less than a year of minimal use before I can paint.

Geez Mike,

I never would have believed it but your are in the Navy so you should know. Is it true that you have transvestite seals out there on the left coast?

As for the crud in the rear frame, you should be able to get most of it with a sponge and a arm inserted thru the PTO opening. This is also a good place to find elbow grease.

That arm through the PTO opening is kinda like this. Maybe Paris Hilton would be willing to help.

You're assuming I'd want her help. I'd rather she stay away from my family.

lest my wife find out about our torrid affair.

I guess I killed this thread. Mike usually gets alot of response to his questions.

It must be hard to have a sense of humor when your tractor has just died. Put it out on the fencerow and get a life (and another tractor).

I have heard of guys rinsing out the tranny with Kerosene. Don't know if I would swear by it.

Along with the reusing the tranny oil, when you drain it next time have two sets of buckets ready. One for the first bit of oil that will have alot of crud and the last bit when it starts to flush across the bottom of the case. And the second set of buckets for the "good stuff" in between.
