I am currently doing about the same thing on my H right now. I had a bad bull pinion carrier, but I pulled the lid. Everybody I talked to said don't do it, you can get by without. (On a side note - I am really glad I did. I figured out why 5th gear wouldn't work well and I had to replace 4th/5th while I was in there. I would have been really mad if 4th would have went out after I did all that!) As for a price, why don't you just call a salvage yard? Jackel's in Fort Atkinson, WI is always willing to shoot you a price. Did you check ePay? Subract 10-20% from their price. I know a guy I pull with and he bought the entire rear end for $200.
JJ from Afton - Afton like just west of the mighty Rock River??? You might be a neighbor if that is true!
