Wondering how hard and whats involved in changing a rear axle in a 44 H. Is it a tough job or can any weekend mechanic hack it? Thanks!

Its not too hard. Helps to have two people to handle the tire and wheel and axle. Usually you can undo the bullgear from the rear axle by removing the PTO and reaching into the transmission through that opening rather than removing the transmission cover. To start remove the wheel and center off the axle, than take off the square cover on the housing holding the seal and bearing. Than just remove the bolt and washer holding the bullgear, it helps to use shims to prop the gear up so it doesnt fall. and than you can pull the axle right out of the housing. To reassemble just reverse the process.

The picture shown is of a 560W axle but the procedure is still the same.

Hope this helps

If you have had a lot of water in the rear end at one time or another, you may find it difficult to get the splined end of the axle to slide out of the bull gear. By putting blocks of wood or even metal between the bolts that hold the axles into the bullgear, You can push the axle out while unthreading the bolt. Just be careful to not damage the threads on the end of the axle or bolt by having too few threads engaged while unthreading the bolt.

how much would the housings and axles be worth a peice? I know a guy not too far from here that has everything I need on a parts tractor and he doesn't have a price. He says comparable to a salvage yard, maybe a bit lower since I know him. Wondering what price to shoot him. Thanks

I am currently doing about the same thing on my H right now. I had a bad bull pinion carrier, but I pulled the lid. Everybody I talked to said don't do it, you can get by without. (On a side note - I am really glad I did. I figured out why 5th gear wouldn't work well and I had to replace 4th/5th while I was in there. I would have been really mad if 4th would have went out after I did all that!)
As for a price, why don't you just call a salvage yard? Jackel's in Fort Atkinson, WI is always willing to shoot you a price. Did you check ePay? Subract 10-20% from their price. I know a guy I pull with and he bought the entire rear end for $200.

JJ from Afton - Afton like just west of the mighty Rock River??? You might be a neighbor if that is true!
