Hydraulic oil is just engine oil with different additives. Up until the late 1950's IH recommended engine oil in the hydraulic systems because that's all there was.
If you have access to CaseIH HyTran or compatible fluid, that would work just as well in the hydraulic system as engine oil.
I highly recommend that you locate a manual for your 444. If you can't get one from a CaseIH dealer there, and there are no manual reproducers over there, you could check with BinderBooksDOTcom here in the states. We have 444s here too.
