hello from northern ireland, i'm working at an IH444 and was wondering if anyone here would know what lubricants i should be using in the transmission of my tractor. i have taken out both the bungs on the bottom of the tractor.

thanks

Hi Michael, use EP90 gear oil in the back end and use engine oil in the hydraulic lift unit. We are featureing IH tractors at the big tractor show at Newark here in the UK, November 7th and 8th. MJ

hi MJ, thanks for the reply, i'm just getting into old tractors - why isn't it hydraulic oil in the hydraulic lift unit? is there hydraulic oil used anywhere in the machine? sorry if i'm showing my ignorance here, lol

michael

Hydraulic oil is just engine oil with different additives. Up until the late 1950's IH recommended engine oil in the hydraulic systems because that's all there was.

If you have access to CaseIH HyTran or compatible fluid, that would work just as well in the hydraulic system as engine oil.

I highly recommend that you locate a manual for your 444. If you can't get one from a CaseIH dealer there, and there are no manual reproducers over there, you could check with BinderBooksDOTcom here in the states. We have 444s here too.

Put IH Hytran in the hyd reservoir, or a hydraulic fluid that meets Hytran specs. There is no reason to use engine oil. IH has not recommended engine oil since the early 50's.
