Bruce, Like Andrew said, an original 48 MD would have come from the factory with a 12 volt generator, positive ground, and two 6-volt batteries, one under the tank and one on the right side of the seat. However, when good 12 volt batteries came out, most owners removed the side battery box and just used a 12-volt under the tank. I have a 46 MD, and 35 years ago I removed the 2nd 6-volt and just use a single 12-volt under the tank. Think I still have the side battery box. If I remember, the box was in your way when you got on from the right side. If your battery is under the seat, maybe someone put on a seat and battery box from a 400 or 450. Al
