Thanks to all who replied to my previous post. I got some valuable information from everyone. This MD I'm looking at has an alternator, which would be 12 volt negative ground, correct??? Also, the battery is under the seat. According to ser.no., it's a 1948 model. Would the battery be in the right location for this yesr?? Thanks again for the help.

Don"t know how "correct" you want to be, sometimes just getting it starting on gas, switching to diesel and back without draining the battery can be correct enough. My 51 has a 12v generator and a battery under the tank. I think your 48 should have had a 6v generator with a 6v battery under the tank and the seat but I'm not 100% sure.

you should have 2 6volt batteries one under the fuel tank and the other on the side of the seat, if i recall to the right.

Bruce,
Like Andrew said, an original 48 MD would have come from the factory with a 12 volt generator, positive ground, and two 6-volt batteries, one under the tank and one on the right side of the seat. However, when good 12 volt batteries came out, most owners removed the side battery box and just used a 12-volt under the tank. I have a 46 MD, and 35 years ago I removed the 2nd 6-volt and just use a single 12-volt under the tank. Think I still have the side battery box. If I remember, the box was in your way when you got on from the right side. If your battery is under the seat, maybe someone put on a seat and battery box from a 400 or 450.

Well, here's a little update on the MD. I had removed the starting tank so I could clean it out well, and there is a substantial leak behind the mounting bracket that is welded to the tank. Is there any fix for this, or should I look for a replacement??
