I'm only 23 years old, so I wasn't around when these things came off the line. However, my grandpa was an implement dealer, and he always told me that the early H's came with the smaller PTO and the later ones came with the bigger one. If I remember right, the larger PTO may have even been an option when ordering the tractors new. I'm not sure.
My 1940 H had already been updated when I got it. It should be pretty easy to find a larger PTO (I may even have one) and also fairly simple to replace. It will be especially nice if you're going to be using it a lot because you won't have to worry about that adapter anymore.
