I fixed the tractor myself on tuesday with just a piece of 1/2" keystock! You wouldn't believe what had happened.
The axle was turning in the wheel! The axle is a splined shaft and there were 2 x 2 teeth in each wheel. God knows when, the previous owner of the tractor broke all 4 of the teeth on the left wheel and then repaired it by welding on one iron tooth to the cast iron wheel - not very strong. I'm amazed that the tractor lasted so long with such a crummy repair. To repair it, I cut a triangular groove about 1/3" deep in the forged removable part where the axle meets the wheel and fitted a square piece of 1/2" high strength steel keystock where my groove and the matching grove in the axle meet to form a square. I then gave the 2 bolts holding that forged piece a hell of a tightening and now the tractor's working great. I am very relieved now.
