If you have only been at it a month, I'd say you are in over your head. If you had been fooling with these tractors for 10 years, I'd say what's the problem ? It sounds like the head and block that you bought were good. The crank is bad, but so what ? You were buying a head and block. If they really are good and not cracked you will have to buy new pistons and sleeves anyway, so stuck is not a problem.
A little research in your parts books or at the CaseIH website will tell you if the crank from your A will fit the Super C block. Actually, if the blocks have the same casting / part number, you are good to go. Did the SC motor come with the hydraulic pump ?
The guy who said the A had a bad mag when the starter was shot was a little off the mark. A $1000 for a non-running A is a little steep, but not too bad, if the rest of the tractor was complete and in decent shape. The busted block and head are a bummer, but mt Super C ran for 10+ years with a cracked block and never leaked a drop of antifreeze externally or into the oil.
Please note: you will never make any money rebuilding old tractors. You do it because you like them or because you use them and they are cheap reliable horsepower.
