I want to second the wheel suggestion. I thought sure my right rear had a bid problem with the axle, bearings or final drive. Then took it off to do some painting and found that several of the bolts which hold the rim to the wheel were loose. Lube every bolt & nut on the wheels, then torque them down good, before you tear into anything else.
And if it hasn't run in a while, I'd try taking the carb off and inspecting every little nook and cranny while cleaning it up.
Like Jim said, take the fuel line from the bowl to the carb off and blow that out with a compressor, and with the bowl off, poke a wire up into the gas tank to assure there is no obstruction. Use insulated wire or a thin brass or plastic tool to avoid sparks and remember that fumes in the tank are more dangerous than a full tank. Pull the fuel line elbow off the carb and check the filter screen / clean it. Double check that the plug wires are in the proper order for firing (lot's of us take them off at some point, and may accidently put them back on wrong) and make sure that all wires / cables have a darn good connection. Check ALL fluids of course, then when you finally get spark, it should show signs of life. AS SOON AS IT FIRES up and runs, check your oil pressure. Some new plugs wouldn't hurt, and don't use champion.
Then if you get it running, and it still needs some more lovin, you've already taken care of the basics. But hopefully it will purr with all this prep work! Congratulations and good luck.
