Read on here time and time again how the 6-cylinder gas engines were kinda thirsty.....never really hit home since all we'd ever used our 656 gasser for since I've been around the fuel expense side of things was a loader tractor...
Well...yesterday I filled it full of gas then went out to pull our cowchip-harrow drag....this is, as usual, a homebuilt-contraption made with an 18-foot peice of heavy I-beam with 5 railroad ties chained behind it in various spots to cover the whole width, and a large powerline pole chained behind the railroad ties for good measure and final bustin-up of the chips....should pull pretty easy- just slides over the ground...been pulling it with one of our bigger 4x4 150hp JD tractors but figured that was like shooting squirrels with a cannon...plus the weather's been just too darn nice to be cooped up in an eclosed cab....
On good solid ground the 656 would pull it fine in 4th gear with the T/A ahead...in looser sandy hillsides or on damp spots on the meadows pulling the T/A lever back would usually do it....rarely had to shift down....but it worked the ol' girl pretty good regardless...
But DANG- that fuel guage just dropped like a rock!!! Which brings me to the question I have here.....Anybody have any opinons on whether a better-lugging 4-cylinder Super M would be a better machine fuel-wise for this operation? Or how bout I hook my 650D onto the deal? I could go back to using one of our big 4x4 JD's on it but ya know using an older IH kinda makes the "work" into "fun"....
