656 Gasser= What a Lush!!!!

Read on here time and time again how the 6-cylinder gas engines were kinda thirsty.....never really hit home since all we'd ever used our 656 gasser for since I've been around the fuel expense side of things was a loader tractor...

Well...yesterday I filled it full of gas then went out to pull our cowchip-harrow drag....this is, as usual, a homebuilt-contraption made with an 18-foot peice of heavy I-beam with 5 railroad ties chained behind it in various spots to cover the whole width, and a large powerline pole chained behind the railroad ties for good measure and final bustin-up of the chips....should pull pretty easy- just slides over the ground...been pulling it with one of our bigger 4x4 150hp JD tractors but figured that was like shooting squirrels with a cannon...plus the weather's been just too darn nice to be cooped up in an eclosed cab....

On good solid ground the 656 would pull it fine in 4th gear with the T/A ahead...in looser sandy hillsides or on damp spots on the meadows pulling the T/A lever back would usually do it....rarely had to shift down....but it worked the ol' girl pretty good regardless...

But DANG- that fuel guage just dropped like a rock!!! Which brings me to the question I have here.....Anybody have any opinons on whether a better-lugging 4-cylinder Super M would be a better machine fuel-wise for this operation? Or how bout I hook my 650D onto the deal? I could go back to using one of our big 4x4 JD's on it but ya know using an older IH kinda makes the "work" into "fun"....

My Dad always had the philosophy that if the tractor WOULD pull it in 4th, but made the tractor WORK to do it, then you should drop down one gear and just leave it there. Yes, you will be going slower, but at the end of the day you will have accomplished just as much, the tractor would be in better shape, you will have used LESS fuel, and YOU would not be as worn out either. That philosophy seemed to pay off because we rarely had any breakdowns and we never complained about using too much fuel.

Oh I knew that dropping down a gear would have been better...and if we used this tractor on a regular basis I woulda. Since it was too nice out to be cooped up in a cab, I just wanted to give the ol' girl a workout for a change....it spends most of it's life now resting quietly in the shed providing a target for sparrows...

When I was a kid we farmed with 2 656 tractors and a 706. When working ground (no-till was not yet heard of) you filled up in the morning, filled up at dinner-time (lunch), and if working after supper you filled up again. Grandpa, Dad, and Uncle Mike all had gas barrels at each of our houses because the policy was the owner of the ground being farmed furnished the gas. It was during this time (early 70s) that portable tanks in pick-up trucks began to get popular so you could fill the tractor in the field. We didn't have one, but had several five gallon cans for hauling gas to the field.

Diesels are most always cheaper to run, no mater what the size.

Now lets see here my 806 diesel working will suck up over 5 gallon and hour now farm diesel delivered to the farm is 3.87.9 706 gasser with the 291 and a few mods will run wright with the 806 and suck down 4.5-5 gallon and hour at 3.65.9 a gallon . Both tractors pull the same plow in the same gear . Now what tractor cost less to run . When was the last time that ya did a major tune up ????? Did ya ever stop and think about how many gallon ya burn in your pick up dragging a loaded trailer . Maybe we should take a lession from the Amish and go back to horses , wonder how many miles to a bale of hay ????

Once again, the vet makes a good point! At the same time that fuel prices are skyrocketing, the bottom's fallen out of the horse market...unless a horse is well-bred, papered, and well-trained, people are havin' trouble giving 'em away. Maybe the "doing like the Amish" thing will catch on? Nah....not unless somebody invents A/C for a saddle.
