The correct way is to line up the dot of the camshaft gear with the dot on the crankshaft gear. Those are the factory marks. I don't recall seeing any dots on the mag drive gear. And the service manual says the mag gear does not need to be timed to the camshaft gear. The timing of the mag is adjustable with the two bolts on the magneto coupling. So if you bring #1 cyl. to TDC, then set the mag to fire on #1 by adjustment of the bolts in the mag coupler, the engine should be able to fire from 0 to about 35 degrees ATDC. Hope this helps
