Putting together an F12 Engine. When the timing marks line up, the engine is 20 degrees after top dead center (20° ATDC, I put a degree wheel and checked)

Both the cam and crank timing gears have single dots and also double dots on them. Neither set of marks line up at TDC #1 (when dot to dot)Single dots are closest at the 20° ATDC

Does this sound correct?

The correct way is to line up the dot of the camshaft gear with the dot on the crankshaft gear. Those are the factory marks. I don't recall seeing any dots on the mag drive gear. And the service manual says the mag gear does not need to be timed to the camshaft gear. The timing of the mag is adjustable with the two bolts on the magneto coupling. So if you bring #1 cyl. to TDC, then set the mag to fire on #1 by adjustment of the bolts in the mag coupler, the engine should be able to fire from 0 to about 35 degrees ATDC. Hope this helps

Try this Ted, Mesh the single punch mark on the camgear with the double punch marks on crankshaft gear. Mesh the double punch marks on the camshaft gear with the double punch marks on the magneto-governor or distributor drive gear. Your woodruff key on the camgear should face to your left. Hal

Check the cam lobes to see if they are ready to fire at TDC (both valves closed). I am not sure on an F12 but on a B when the marks are lined up it is ready to fire on # 4.
