I went through this a little while back when I noticed the same thing you describe in a '51 M I have. It's serialed as a 5000 ft. tractor, but the block is a replacement, cast in '58 or '59 so I don't know exactly what's going on. But I found the same thing by looking in the spark plug hole, a 1/4" to 5/16" dome on the pistons.
More recently I bought a Super M that came brand new on propane, MUCH bigger dome!
