Howdy boys and happy new year to all. I took a peek through the spark plug holes today with a probe light to see what the top of my pistons are shaped like. Flat on one side and sloped upward on the other. That wouldn't be some form of higher compression than stock, or firecrater, would it? Or, would it? There is no "crater" that I can see. (This is not a distillate/kero super M.) Much obilged. mike durhan

I went through this a little while back when I noticed the same thing you describe in a '51 M I have. It's serialed as a 5000 ft. tractor, but the block is a replacement, cast in '58 or '59 so I don't know exactly what's going on. But I found the same thing by looking in the spark plug hole, a 1/4" to 5/16" dome on the pistons.

More recently I bought a Super M that came brand new on propane, MUCH bigger dome!

There are standard "stepped" pistons that just have about 1/2 the piston higher than the other and is basically flat steps, like this:

This is the M&W "Turbo Dome" piston:

These TurboDome pistons were available in different compression ratios for differing altitudes, etc:

This is an aftermarket stepped piston stamped "Conformatic"

And, finally, the IH FireCrater:

Steven f/AZ: Mine look more like the standard "stepped" pistons. I am going to look again tomorrow to see if the higher half is sloped or level on top. Thanks for the photos. That helps. mike durhan

Mike you check the archives, there were some pictures posted in one about the different pistons made for these tractors.

I belive it was posted by "Steven/AZ"

He posted some good pictures of them that may be of some help.

Thanks to all for your help identifying these pistons. This all "fits" with the character of the tractor, i.e., re-curved and advanced "J" code distributor with 22 degrees total advance, behlen ps, two-way remote valve, etc. Tractor was definitely updated over the years. Thanks again, everyone.

Most of Farmall M's came out with flat pistons.
Many farmers when they rebuilt the engines purchased M & W rebuild kits that used high compression pistons to boost horsepower. Usually they resleeve them with a larger diamete piston to boost the horsepowe also,

Well CityBoy, Sounds like the factory 5000" alt. pistons if there flat across with a 5/16" or so lift on the other. with ok valves should have 145 pounds or so. Have a set in my W-6.

deff some type of high compression pistons you got in there. Do a compression test and see what you got (from what iv seen there are alot of diffent high compression styles, heck they have been making these kits for half century lol :)
