The cups are put in with the hole pointing down inorder for the fuel to shoot into the dish on the top of the piston . When this happens it cause turbulence in the cyl. which helps in the combustion of the fuel particles .The precups & glow plugs get combustion started ,the finalburn takes place in the cyl . I have seen where the cups were put in upside down & the engine would produce white smoke but wouldn't start, installed right the engine started
