Howdy, boys. I decided to change the oil in the SH today. It looked dirty anyway, and besides, the carb had flooded so badly once - before I rebuilt it - that even the governor plate was leaking gas. So, I figured the oil was diluted with gas. It was. The oil coming out of the pan had the consistency of water. Plus, it had loosened up crud that was old enough for membership in the AARP. Anyway, I figured on a simple oil and filter change. WRONG! I would say the square rubber seal ring under the filter cover had not been changed since the tractor was built in 12/53. It was as hard as a piece of carbon and I had to dig it out in pieces. It took two hours just to get a clean groove in which to install the new ring. All the while I was making every effort to avoid getting dirt into the engine through the filter mount passages. It all ended well, but man, talk about the world's longest oil change. I'll bet I hold the record at 5 hours. Point is, sometimes a simple job takes me much longer than I ever anticipated. This was one of those simple jobs. mike durhan
