Howdy, boys. I decided to change the oil in the SH today. It looked dirty anyway, and besides, the carb had flooded so badly once - before I rebuilt it - that even the governor plate was leaking gas. So, I figured the oil was diluted with gas. It was. The oil coming out of the pan had the consistency of water. Plus, it had loosened up crud that was old enough for membership in the AARP.
Anyway, I figured on a simple oil and filter change. WRONG! I would say the square rubber seal ring under the filter cover had not been changed since the tractor was built in 12/53. It was as hard as a piece of carbon and I had to dig it out in pieces. It took two hours just to get a clean groove in which to install the new ring. All the while I was making every effort to avoid getting dirt into the engine through the filter mount passages.
It all ended well, but man, talk about the world's longest oil change. I'll bet I hold the record at 5 hours. Point is, sometimes a simple job takes me much longer than I ever anticipated. This was one of those simple jobs.

Mike: Did you refill with detergent oil? If yes, run it for several hours, drain it again, then take the pan off. I've seen them have an inch of sludge in bottom of pan after using detergent oil for the first time.

Been there, done that. Only I went one step farther. I dropped the oil pan and cleaned a bunch of junk out of it, too.

I've experienced the same issues with my last three tractors.I found that an o-ring pick digs them out easily-albeit with some force needed.

I found that with mine that had not been changed in over 25 years. I think I was a little quicker though. Maybe 4 hours.

Yep. Been there. Some folks say don't worry about about that gasket unless it is leaking, which is a big mistake. The new filter comes with a new gasket. Use it.

I sure don't change them until they leak, just too much trouble and I've got my narrow chisel made for the job. I've got several spare gaskets :-)

Hmm
I just put a new Wix filter on a SuperM and it didn't come with the gasket. Maybe they forgot?

I don't believe my SMTA uses a gasket....just metal to metal.

The last filter I bought from NAPA didn't have the gasket either so I don't buy my tractor filters there anymore. The Baldwin filters do have the gasket.

When I first started working in a gas station(when they were still Service Stations)Chevys still used canister oil filters and you would have to dig out a gasket at least once a day. My Super was the same.
