Heint: Didn't that have a Z in earlier posts?

Getting to the Super A and changes made during production. The hydraulics were quite significant as the torque tube and engine block both had to be changed to accomodate the hydraulics. Engine block required a hole for pump drive off timing gears. The A torque tube is round on top while the SA has a flat top torque tube where the touch control unit is mounted. Other than that the SA remained very much unchanged until the early 50s Most of these changes occured on or near serial number 310300; steering box working parts and complete tyrod setup, it changed to automotive type tyrods. Engine block changed to part number 354898 R1 being the same block as SC and it retained 3" bore with thicker sleeves, giving it still 113 cu in, whereas the SC was 123 cu in with 3-1/8" bore.

Shortly after that it changed from cut out relay to voltage regulator, sorry I don't have an exact serial number on that change. About the same time IH also began switching Super A's from mag to distributor ign. Not many SA had mags after 1952 however it was still available until end of 130 production. Dual fuel was much the same, not many after 52 however it was available until end of 130 production. Also in 52 or early 53 the transmission gears were hardened, don't have the exact serial number on that. The Hydraulic touch control unit changed a bit around 52-53.

At serial number 336711 the SA changed to presurized cooling system. About 2000 later, the brakes got an upgrade to same type as 100, 130 and 140.

The final big change was at serial 356001, IH started using 3-1/8" sleeves making it 123 cu in., added a water pump and larger radiator. By then it was basically a Farmall 100 with SA sheet metal Serial number changed from left seat support to left side of clutch housing. Some say fast hitch also became available at this time, but I've never seen any official conformation. It wouldn't surprise me and I'll not argue with anyone who claims to have a SA1 with factory fast hitch. Super A production ended at serial number 357958 and all Super A between 356001 and 357958 were refered to as Super A1 as in (one). There could also have been an IA1, I as in industrial.

I hope this helps some, sorry I didn't have exact serial numbers on some of these changes. You may find others who do know. Most of what I have exact serial numbers on happened as a result of buying parts over the years. One lesson with a SA and buying parts, always have your serial number close by.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
