Why don't you hold off buying a battery and remove the distrubutor and install your mag and just hand crank the engine to start it. Then you can decide later on what you want to do first.
Be sure to note where the rotor is pointing when you pull the distributor. When you install the mag rotate the rotor to the position the distributor rotor was pointing. Connect the plug wires in the 1-3-4-2 firing order and it should start. You will need to connect a grounding wire for shutdown. Hal PS: All you need is gas and you can use the tractor. It was done for years by hand cranking most tractors.
