Good news and bad news

Good news: '44 H now lives in Suburbia. It is sitting in my driveway now.

Bad news: You are about to be flooded with a stream of questions! So be prepared. Ok, let me tell you about my day... but first, a pic...

Ok, so got up early and drove about 130 miles with the guy from the EDGE&TA club I joined in his rig and trailer. Winched the tractor on board and secured and picked up the parts he had to go with it... a new throttle since the current one has a stopper welded onto it, NOS gas tank, draw bar, old govenor and an original owners manual. We drove it home and off-loaded it from the trailer and got help from a neighbor to push it up into my driveway.

Later I washed it with my sons. Got a lot of dirt off of it, but there is still a good bit of caked on grime to work at. Later in the evening a question occured to me... I knew the owner had drained the water to save it from the big freeze in the winter. But was there oil? I learned that the oil pan had been smashed, and Tom (the EDGE member) suggested I take a good look in there to make sure the oil pump wasn't damaged. The damage to the pan could explain why I couldn't get the petcocks open. My ignorance on how to properly open a petcock could explain it as well. So, owners manual be damned, I set off to fetch tools. I grabbed a coffee can to open the drain plug a little to see if there was water in the oil, and if there was any oil at all. So I turned and turned and got a couple of drops, but no real flow, which I needed to see water, so I unscrewed it some more and... *pop* it flew right out of my hand against a thick stream of black oil! "Coffe can!!" I grabbed it and held it with oil covered hands... "oh crap, this is a lot... PLUG!!!" I grabbed it and wrestled it in an inch from the top of the can. I have oil all over my driveway now.

Day 1, lesson 1.... CHECK

Well, since I started it... I grabbed a bigger container and finished off the drain. Then I pulled the pan. Pump like fine as far as I can tell. Nothing bent.

So I spent the rest of the evening spreading kitty litter over the oil and I'm going to be sweeping in the morning and using a concrete cleaner after the tractor gets out of the way.

I've got a few questions about things I've found on the tractor so far. So be prepared... third party image
