To get a 460D to start decent you need to have all the glow plugs working. You can check them without taking them out. Disconnect all but one and then press the glow plug switch. A good plug should move the meter about 1/3 to 1/2 way. Check them all one at a time. Replace any that do not move the needle in the gauge. With the glow plugs warm, 30 to 45 seconds in warm weather, try to start the engine. If you get steady white smoke out the exhaust while cranking, the injection pump and injectors are working. Slow cranking speed will cause a hard start situation. If when you have the glow plugs working and you are sure that you are getting fuel to the cylinders, it does not start on the starter but does readily start by pulling, repair the starter, battery, and or cables. 460Ds are very sensitive to proper valve recession in the cylinder head. The original specs were from .003 to .046 below the surface of the head. Later specs called for .048 to .064 or in that range. Use the early specs and keep them as close to .003 as possible. Once you get near .050 it will be hard to start. How much blowby do you have coming out the breather pipe on the side of the engine when it is pulling hard? That will give you a good indication to the condition if the sleeves and pistons. Too much blowby or a properly maintained breather system can be the cause of a lot of oil being blown out the breather pipe. It is not unusual for these engines to blow more oil out when lightly loaded than they do when they are pulling hard.
