As being a past owner of a 450 D yes when it gets cold out they can be a real pain . First ya have to have a ral good battery that has around 850-1200 cold cranking amps , Real good heavy cabels that have the fine strand wire , the correct spark plugs with a good cap good solid core plug wires as i have seen way tomany times where a guy has used carbon core wire and this cuts the enegry to the plug down The points should be changed every eyears while doing a tune up the timing should be dead on and the gas tank or starting tank how ever ya want to call it kept full at ALL times. As said below a water heater does help as it keeps the water and the block warm and the engine will turn over faster . Along with all the above also have the starter gone over to insure that it is not draging or not prefoming to it's best . Now with us down here in the Buckeye when fall harvest is done all our diesels get put away and we use the gassers for the rest of the winter as long as they are tuned up with good batterys and fresh fuel they always start even down to -35 any colder i don't start . When using and old MD -450D it is to your best interest to allow and extended warm up on the gas side before switchen to the diesel as the shock of going from low compression to high compression is hard on them then allow a bit of warm up on the diesel side before putting it to work and when working a diesel in cold weather it is also wise to cut the air flow down to the rad as to allow the engine temp to get up above the 160 degree mark so the fuel will burn better .
