While it is true you can sometimes get away with disconnecting the ground lead on the battery with a system that has a generator to see if the generator is putting out without hurting anything, if you do it with an alternator system you will probably blow the diodes or burn out the windings. If your ammeter is indicating it is charging 20 amps you already have a good indication the alternator is putting out. Read across the battery with a voltmeter to find out what is going on. HTH Jim
