I must have a short somewhere. The ammeter still swings hard positive while the tractor is running. The strange thing is it only does it while running...I haven't tried disconnecting the battery while it's running to see if the ammeter swings back to center...will she keep running w/o the battery connected?..and run off of the alternator?

It may just be wired wrong.

If you have a Delco 10SI alt., if the internal regulator is good, check for battery voltage at the #2 terminal[flat blade connector ] on the internal regulator. This terminal reads battery voltage for the regulator, & if it doesn't have battery voltage, it assumes that the battery needs as much charge as the alternator can deliver. If there is no voltage at #2 terminal, you have an open wire or a terminal end not making contact somewhere in this circuit.-- Between the battery & #2 yerminal. If this terminal[ #2] has voltage, the regulator is most likely bad.

Thanks guys...I had a previous post. I have a Super M that's converted to 12volt with a 10si alternator. The battery and the alternator both check out, but, the ammeter swings full + while the tractor is running. I checked the internal diode on the alternator, also is OK. Trying to figure out where the juice is going...really puzzled.

Yes it should keep running, but the amp gauge should also peg on the charge side if you do that and you can/will burn out the alterntor if you do that since it will see a dead battery and do its best to put out max amps becuase of it. DON'T try it unless you want to buy another alternator.

While it is true you can sometimes get away with disconnecting the ground lead on the battery with a system that has a generator to see if the generator is putting out without hurting anything, if you do it with an alternator system you will probably blow the diodes or burn out the windings. If your ammeter is indicating it is charging 20 amps you already have a good indication the alternator is putting out. Read across the battery with a voltmeter to find out what is going on.
