Ed, Im NOT a fan of those 8 volt set ups (ESPECIALLY on smaller easy cranked tractors like yours), if you insist on changing voltage for faster crankind Id go ahead to the standard 12 instead of that oddball 8 volt system. Its indeed true if you used two six volt batetries in paralell your cranking amps availability is doubled. I AGREE 100% to first try to remove n clean n wire brush n polish each n every battery n starter n cable n ground connection as posted below and use 00 Gauge cables which can help improve cranking performance. Be sure the ground cable is to a clean rigid main connection instead of any thin or rusty light sheet metal component.

A full charged good 6 volt battery ought to read 6.3 volts setting but rise to near 7 or so volts at wide open running throttle if the charging system is allllllllll okay. Make sure the genny belt is good n tight and the genny and VR (if it uses one) are both well grounded. Insure theres electrolyte above all the battery plates and no cells exhibit a gray or milky color and best yet to have a shop LOAD TEST the battery cuz if its weak it may be the cause of poor cranking. Another cause of weak cranking might be a bad starter switch/solenoid you know!!!
