Make sure your starter is not getting weak. I had the one on my SM rebuilt it was amazing how much better it turned over.... Wish I had thought of the starter before I spent the money on a new battery.... Tallperson

last spring I rewired my mid 40's A! and in 2 months it would'nt start, Quess what! I did'nt solder conections and already had corrosion! cleaned all and every started just fine, spins like a top! POINT IS, just make sure all connections is good and clean and you'll find there is no reason for an 8 vt batt.

I know of several that run an 8v batt and have for years change nothing just keep pos gnd. A good starter with 1ga cables will start just fine also. You can get a new one on e-bay for 115 no core charge. I put one on a new engine and its just super.

I also use a Battery Tender to keep the battery charged.

You still need to be very diligent about keeping all of the components right up to snuff, on a 6-volt system.

Ps: I also use a B/Tender on my 12 volt systems!

8 volt batterys are just a bandade fix for other problems. Plus to use them you need to have your chargeing system tweeked to put out 8-9 volts. Then you also need to find something I haven't seen in years and thats a battery charger that will put out 8 volts. A 6 volt or 12 volt charger will not charge an 8 volt battery. The 6 volt one doesn't put out enough and the 12 volt to much

Ed, Im NOT a fan of those 8 volt set ups (ESPECIALLY on smaller easy cranked tractors like yours), if you insist on changing voltage for faster crankind Id go ahead to the standard 12 instead of that oddball 8 volt system. Its indeed true if you used two six volt batetries in paralell your cranking amps availability is doubled. I AGREE 100% to first try to remove n clean n wire brush n polish each n every battery n starter n cable n ground connection as posted below and use 00 Gauge cables which can help improve cranking performance. Be sure the ground cable is to a clean rigid main connection instead of any thin or rusty light sheet metal component.

A full charged good 6 volt battery ought to read 6.3 volts setting but rise to near 7 or so volts at wide open running throttle if the charging system is alllll llll okay. Make sure the genny belt is good n tight and the genny and VR (if it uses one) are both well grounded. Insure theres electrolyte above all the battery plates and no cells exhibit a gray or milky color and best yet to have a shop LOAD TEST the battery cuz if its weak it may be the cause of poor cranking. Another cause of weak cranking might be a bad starter switch/solenoid you know!!!

I put an 8 volt battery in an H once and it seemed to make alot of difference. I've got one in a A right now.

yes and it will continue to perform. 8BV batts were common when cars were 6v as many went to the 8v so they would start in winter and never heard any problems. I just tuned a C that has 8v and the sp reading was up to standard so dont tell me you have to mess with charging systems as thats just another one i know ablut. Tractor wouldnt start because the cond was open.

I would install new 00 battery cables and clean all connections until nice and shiny. I would solder the new battery spades on the cables too if you do this yourself. Hal

In addition to that, make sure that the generator and regulator are putting out what they should. A fully charged 6 volt battery should test to about 7 1/2 volts.

I was thinking about that after I had posted. Needs to check if the battery is getting charged
and to check the electolyte specific gravity with a hydrometer. Hal

EL TOROW you hit the nail square as the sp gr reading will solve a lot of problems one can have when they think something is wrong. They only cost a few bucks. Just like compression check you want all 3 cells close in the readings.

Here's a picture of the View Chek hydrometer. You put a small sample of battery acid under little glass like flapper or coolant then look through the eye piece and see what scale reading you have. Hal

They gave me one of those ViewCheck hydrometer's when I retired. I need to get a picture of it and post it. It will check antifreeze too. Hal

Yep, cables and connections along with good battery, starter, and she will spin like a top. Well as long as the engine isn't seizing up.
