Even if it's out of time, you should get a spark. It just won't spark at the right time. Have you done the classic spark test to see if you have spark at all? Take a plug out, put the wire back on it, and lay it against the tractor where you can see it, and crank 'er over. You should see a nice blue spark every second or so regardless of where the timing is. Assuming that you really have a 1953 H, it has a battery ignition system. You can replace all the parts in the system, but if you're not getting power from the battery, it won't spark. Make sure you are getting voltage to the coil from the battery.
