I have a tractor, see subject above, that will not fire. I have changed plugs, coil, condenser, points and voltage regulator, but still no spark. I was told it may be out of time. Could someone tell me how to time this machine before I run out of time and give up on it and shoot it. I am a novice at repairing but would like to learn how to do simple things such as this. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. I really won't shoot it because I would probably have to bury it.

Thank you!

No No, calm down. Don't shoot the tractor.
A4 cycle engine works like this. The piston goes down sucking in the air and fuel mixture through the carburetor on what is called the "intake' stroke. (any tiny holes plugged will stop the fuel) As the piston travels past center and starts back up ("compression" stroke) the air is compressed making it a very powerfull mixture so that as the piston comes to the top the distributor sends a spark to ignite the bomb and sends the piston flying dowmward on the "power " stroke. The return is the "exhaust" stroke and the cycle repeats itself. I don't know why you don't have spark but you must troble shoot. First make sure you have voltage to the coil from the ignition switch. Let us know what you find.

Even if it's out of time, you should get a spark. It just won't spark at the right time.

Have you done the classic spark test to see if you have spark at all? Take a plug out, put the wire back on it, and lay it against the tractor where you can see it, and crank 'er over. You should see a nice blue spark every second or so regardless of where the timing is.

Assuming that you really have a 1953 H, it has a battery ignition system. You can replace all the parts in the system, but if you're not getting power from the battery, it won't spark. Make sure you are getting voltage to the coil from the battery.

I'll add to Nats comments that the little insulator that allows the points to be connected to the outside world can be grounded causing no spark. Pull the cap off with the switch on (in neutral) use a screwdriver to fiddle with the points gently. lift up on the movable point and tickle around them (don't pry) if you see some sparking at the points, the insulator is OK.
