I don't know what's 'correct,' but I do know that if it's a slip on plastic flat top like mine it's wrong. I don't think PVC had been invented in '46. My main tank cap is Safety Police 'correct,' and no black stains on the paint. Plenty of pollen that day, though. To be a little more helpful, the part number for the starter tank cap is 40756 D, gasket 40762 D. Good luck, Wm
