From your comment that you just started working on your tracror I assume you just bought it. The comments about it having water in the oil could well be true. But, there is another thing I think may be more likely. You mentioned the color of the oil was grey. This color is usually produced by contaminating the oil with gasoline by having worn rings and an extremely rich fuel mixture. I think it has been years since the oil has been changed, the engine was run rich with leaded gas, and never operated very long at a time. When you drain the oil - smell of it - if it smells rotten - like stale gas - it's diluted. Changing the oil and filter will fix it if it is no longer running rich. Just a thought.
