I"m new to working on my 48 farmall H. The other day I was riding and when I stopped i saw a grey colored fluid all over the governor and bottom plate of the engine. It seems to be oil, and is coming out of the crankcase breather tube as well as the front & rear crank seals. Any ideas where to start? Thanks for any help!

From your comment that you just started working on your tracror I assume you just bought it. The comments about it having water in the oil could well be true. But, there is another thing I think may be more likely. You mentioned the color of the oil was grey. This color is usually produced by contaminating the oil with gasoline by having worn rings and an extremely rich fuel mixture. I think it has been years since the oil has been changed, the engine was run rich with leaded gas, and never operated very long at a time. When you drain the oil - smell of it - if it smells rotten - like stale gas - it's diluted. Changing the oil and filter will fix it if it is no longer running rich. Just a thought.

Sounds like you have water in the oil. Water in the oil is bad news if you run it much that way. Running it that way you can have rod and main bearing go bad fast and then you will need to rebuild the engine. Drain the oil and put new oil in and a new filter before you run it again. It would even be a good idea to let it drain over night to help get more of the oil/water mix out of it

Grey fluid can only mean water in the crankcase oil.Have you checked the engine oil. I'd drain the engine and replace with fresh oil and then try running it again. I don't like the sound of leaks at the crank seals front and rear.

Could there be so much water in it that it's way over the proper level?
Be curious to see how much comes out when you drain it.
