Battle of the Oil Filter Gasket

Bought a '54 Super C a year ago that's in pretty good shape, but leaks some oil. Was very upset with myself to see that the oil gauge was low and it took four+ quarts to bring the oil level up. *Ooops!* I don't know how other Farmalls work, but on the Super C, the filter housing sits on a thin o-ring that fits into a recess, and try as I might, it will hold for about 6 - 20 seconds and start spraying oil. Very frustrating! I've been tightening the bolt finger-tight, then wrenching it another quarter-turn, I don't think that's too much, but that gasket keeps popping out. Does anyone know of a better gasket? Does anyone cut their own? I'm not much of a mechanic, if I did this all the time, maybe I'd have better results, but I would guess that I'm not the first to be frustrated by this problem. Thanks for any input, I've printed out a lot of material from this board and kept it for reference, I'll probably have enough for a book someday.
