Battle of the Oil Filter Gasket

Bought a '54 Super C a year ago that's in pretty good shape, but leaks some oil. Was very upset with myself to see that the oil gauge was low and it took four+ quarts to bring the oil level up. *Ooops!* I don't know how other Farmalls work, but on the Super C, the filter housing sits on a thin o-ring that fits into a recess, and try as I might, it will hold for about 6 - 20 seconds and start spraying oil. Very frustrating! I've been tightening the bolt finger-tight, then wrenching it another quarter-turn, I don't think that's too much, but that gasket keeps popping out. Does anyone know of a better gasket? Does anyone cut their own? I'm not much of a mechanic, if I did this all the time, maybe I'd have better results, but I would guess that I'm not the first to be frustrated by this problem. Thanks for any input, I've printed out a lot of material from this board and kept it for reference, I'll probably have enough for a book someday.

Good lessons come from this forum...
I've had trouble at past oil changes with leaking oil filter housing gaskets on the Super-A. New gasket just didn't seem to fit right each time, but would finally seal after a couple of attempts (and oil all over the place).
Thanks to those in-the-know here who are willing to share, I recently spent some time carefully chipping out a very hard old gasket that must have been buried down in the bottom of that groove for the last 25-years. New gasket went right in as it should. No more leaks or drips.
Thanks again...

I put a 45 degree bend in the end of the right size nail and sharpen it on the grinder then drive it down into the old gasket and pick it out of there. Nails are soft enough to not scratch/score the groove that the O ring goes into. You'll laugh about this someday, but you'll still have the oil stains on your floor. Don't ask how I know this. Dave.

I agree with the others the old gasket is still in there if not more then one of them. BTDT and learned the hard way. Now if you don't have the old gasket in there your problem coud be a stuck oil preassure relief valve but I would bet on the gasket being there before the relief valve

Yup, I'd 2nd Steven's post. I'd almost bet the ranch and the brand that you still have the old gasket in the groove.

You probably have an old O-ring/gasket stuck in the filter housing. Get a dental type pick or smaller screw driver and scrape it out of there.

Every Farmall I've ever bought has an old gasket stuck down in there, they get hard and look like they are part of the housing. The new gasket/O-ring should fit down in the groove, not above or flush with the housing.

Dang, and I thought mine just didn't use a gasket, didn't leak without it and it wouldn't fit anywhere... learn something everyday.

Once you have spent several hours digging that old, hard as iron, o-ring out of the groove, you will be much more inclined to install a new gasket everytime you change the filter.

I've learned the hard way to be more picky about the gasket the IH dealer gives me. Half the time they are folded up or squashed in the filter box. Now, I always check and ask for a straight one.
