The starting valves should isolate the spark plugs from the cylinders in deisel mode, so it's not likely that them firing would do anything. I'd pull the valve cover and make sure that in diesel that all the starting valves in the head are closing completely. Could be linkage adjustment or the valves could be sticking open(fairly common on a tractor that sat for a long time in the gas position). Try squirting some penetrating oil on the valve stems of the starting valves and manually work them open and closed with a screwdriver. Let us know if you find out the problem!
