Solid State 6v Regulator?

As some of you probably know, the old style generators/regulators function as follows...
When there is a load on the battery, the regulator turns on the field winding of the generator, which in turn puts out power, when there is no load, the regulator stops supplying powerto the generator, and hence stops puting out power. This is dont by current sensitive relays in the regulator box. This is not a truly regulated system, by any means.
Replacement regulators run upwards of $50 easy. Are these the old relay style or have they switched to a newer solid state regulator.
The solid state ones actually vary the field current which varies the output voltage of the generator.
Now I have no intentions on replacing my regulator for the time being, but I just wondered if such a regulator exists (for 6 volt sytems)..
This would elimate the possibilty of overcharging the battery in the event of a continual non battery charging load.

Now if one converts to 12v, the alternator is self regulated and totally solves this issue.
