in my circle of life friends in central wisconsin, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances are your typical 32 to 50 years of age. we all have full time jobs and basically have farms with an average of a 100 acres. we may be beef, horse, cash crop individuals. our one commonalty is our passion for the older tractors be it farmalls, john deere, allis. ect.. we are not pullers, or go to parades but use them on our farms. most but not all are mechanically inclined. myself personally have 14 farmalls ranging from a cub to a smtad. i have paid 2 times over a $1000 ($1350 and $1500) for a tractor and i no longer have each of them,(the old adage of burn me once shame on you burn me twice shame on me)
now on to your question. as an example around here you can buy a farmall h for around $600 to $700. the tractor will be ok to use but normally needs some work. in a worse case scenario it will need an overhaul, clutch and tires somewhere around the neighborhood of $1700. so now i have $2400 invested in something that will probably last my lifetime. so now when i look at want ads on ytmag, ebay and someone wants $2500 or more for an h i wouldn't even bother to look.
the fact of the matter is i couldn't lay out cash all at once. but i can buy something ($600)and contribute over time to reach that ($2400) with the same result only with one attribute, I KNOW WHAT I HAVE. (the burn me rule)
the one thing i have learned is patients. after 15 years i finally got my smtad. ($900) it runs but needs work but i don't care. i may spend up to $5000 but it isn't all up front and i know what i have after it is done and it will only have one function in life and that is to farm like it was intended to. (actually quite fuel efficient)
i hope you get your money out of your tractor.
myself and circle counterparts are not going to be interested and i think that is why your having trouble getting what you want out of it. there may be other reasons also but in my little world that is our reasons and i would never call and laugh.
sincerely,
tim

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
