Why can't I get my tractor sold? I have been watching auctions for the last 3 years on these SMTA-D's and find that the really good ones bring alot of money. When I advertise mine and get calls , they laugh at my price and never ask again. I just want what the guys are getting at auction. I am frustrated about it and am going to try to find a good antique tractor consignment sale to put it on. Why doesn't advertising work????

I'm with "shoo" on this. If I read your second post correctly you are asking $12K. I think you will be challenged to get that -- even at an auction. People may spend that over time as they do the work, but I don't imagine many will give you that up front. E-bay is another possibility if you haven't yet tried that avenue.

in my circle of life friends in central wisconsin, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances are your typical 32 to 50 years of age. we all have full time jobs and basically have farms with an average of a 100 acres. we may be beef, horse, cash crop individuals. our one commonalty is our passion for the older tractors be it farmalls, john deere, allis. ect.. we are not pullers, or go to parades but use them on our farms. most but not all are mechanically inclined. myself personally have 14 farmalls ranging from a cub to a smtad. i have paid 2 times over a $1000 ($1350 and $1500) for a tractor and i no longer have each of them,(the old adage of burn me once shame on you burn me twice shame on me) now on to your question. as an example around here you can buy a farmall h for around $600 to $700. the tractor will be ok to use but normally needs some work. in a worse case scenario it will need an overhaul, clutch and tires somewhere around the neighborhood of $1700. so now i have $2400 invested in something that will probably last my lifetime. so now when i look at want ads on ytmag, ebay and someone wants $2500 or more for an h i wouldn't even bother to look. the fact of the matter is i couldn't lay out cash all at once. but i can buy something ($600)and contribute over time to reach that ($2400) with the same result only with one attribute, I KNOW WHAT I HAVE. (the burn me rule) the one thing i have learned is patients. after 15 years i finally got my smtad. ($900) it runs but needs work but i don't care. i may spend up to $5000 but it isn't all up front and i know what i have after it is done and it will only have one function in life and that is to farm like it was intended to. (actually quite fuel efficient) i hope you get your money out of your tractor. myself and circle counterparts are not going to be interested and i think that is why your having trouble getting what you want out of it. there may be other reasons also but in my little world that is our reasons and i would never call and laugh.
sincerely,
tim

there are a lot of people who think they can steal something as the condition is important. It should bring at least 5000 or more. How original and do the tires match so forth. Just dont get in a hurry as they arent that many around you need to spread the adds around to get as much coverage as you can just sit tight someone will be glad to have it.

I know there alot of Nice SMs out there bringing close to $3900 and more but I would not exspect to get over $2000.00 for mine and mine is pretty stock and good shape its just not restored. JON

See this is why some people get upset about dealing tractors. I think you are asking a wee much personally. These tractors are out there and ya they might be hard to find but they are there. An old guy about 80 who bought one new just sold it last summer in iowa. Some guy came along and offered him $2000 and he thought that was a great deal (the old man) THat is almost what he paid for it new! The man buying it new that it was not really used for the last 20 years, but the thing would start up and run on both fuels, new tires about 10 years ago(still looked new) fenders, Factory PS, fast hitch. Tin work was mint. I never had the balls to flat out off the guy money for it but it would have been about $4000-$5000! I new what the tractor was and never pursued getting it my loss, now to you situation. I agree with others I would rather by a junker that needs everything and o it myself then spend big bucks up front. They are nice tractors but I can live without it too. You have to be realistic as well. I just a got a JD 730 DS Electic start for $3500 and it will need very little. Just need to look look look until and you can find the deals.

My two cents well about 2 dollars.

Non-IH Front End -$2,000
Ready for Paint -$2,500

If it was really show-ready it might approach the over $10k crowd, but it is not.
