Check that ignition timing is set at Top Dead Center when rotating the engine by hand. Use a ohmmeter or test light to be certain. The mark is hard to see on the flywheel so locate it and use chalk or white-out to highlight. I believe it is stamped TC 1-4; the mark will line up with the raised mark on the flywheel cover. Helps to have 2 people on this task. Other concern is the proper float level; not enough fuel will cause the same symptom as incorrect timing.
