Farmall A want pull load

Good Morning, I have a Farmall A that I recently restored. Everything is in good condition but it runs rough at wide open throttle. I have to nurse the throttle to get to full. Then at full it will not pull a load and will barely pull itself. The carb is rebuilt and is spotless. Do you think it could be a burnt valve or is the governer worn. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was my Granddads tractor and has been taken care of it whole life. He says he wasn't having trouble when he parked it!!! Thanks for the help.

You might want to replace that ignition coil before doing anything else. If that doesn't do it you have a fuel delivery problem. Could be crud in the tank, might be the shut off valve on the sediment bowl is not fully open, maybe the fuel inlet screen in the carburetor? Some of the new needle valves have a tendency to stick closed also. Might try tapping gently on the carb bowl to see if you can jar the needle valve loose. It will probably be OK after that.

Check that ignition timing is set at Top Dead Center when rotating the engine by hand. Use a ohmmeter or test light to be certain. The mark is hard to see on the flywheel so locate it and use chalk or white-out to highlight. I believe it is stamped TC 1-4; the mark will line up with the raised mark on the flywheel cover.
Helps to have 2 people on this task.
Other concern is the proper float level; not enough fuel will cause the same symptom as incorrect timing.

I would check the valve lash and set them at at .017" cold. You need to check for any blockage in your gas line such as rust or dirt.
If you're using a fuel filter that's used with a fuel pump could be starving the engine for fuel. It may restrict the gas flow on a gravity
fed engine. Loosen the gas line at the carburetor and check for a good stream of gas. Hold a clean can under it to catch the gas. Are you sure you set the float level high enough in the carburetor? Hal

How about .017" HOT? Set them about .023" cold.

Ummm, IH calls for .014 hot on that engine.
.016-.017 cold is pretty close after it gets hot.

For .017"H I would set them at .020"C. How's the heat out your way? Calling for 102-103 today.
Hal

That humidity sounds like what we have here in MD.
They call it Dog Days, but our dogs don't like it so hot. Hal

I'm 60 miles East of Atlanta and it's 97 now expected to be 104 this afternoon.
I'll check the fuel flow tonight and let you know what I find. One other thing I didn't do anything to the mag except put new points in. Could the coil be bad. Thank ya'll for your help.

I thought i set the float level right. I think i'll check the timing first before i take the carb back apart. As far as the valves I just set those at .014 warm.
Also, I took the carb off my super A last week and put it on my A and it seemed to run a little better. I guess I need to check the float level. Thanks guys. Russell

That does not sound like the coil to me, I think old (carb adjustment) or the ones who said fuel flow are right, pull the fuel line at the carb and check the flow, it should be a strong pi$$ of gas, if not, you have crud in the tank or line, I'd check that before I spent $40 on a coil.

Sounds like its running on the lean side to me. If you have an adjustable main jet open it up some if you don't have an adjsutable main jet you need to do some more cleaning in that area of the carb. Be sure tio use a piece of wire etc to clean out the passages, a carb can look clean but still not be clean BTDT. I use tip cleaners from my tourch to clean out passages like the main jet.

You may not be getting enough fuel to the carb.
