Remove all the plugs, use a compression gauge in the spark plug hole, and spin the starter. Do it first dry, them squirt motor oil in each cylinder and do it again. If the compression dry is low and increases significantly wet, you have a ring problem. If it is somewhat low and stays the about the same, the valves are leaking. More important than the actual numbers is the difference -- the cylinders should be within 10% of each other. If you have a gasoline engine with standard pistons, the original compression was about 120. How much less than that you can go and still have a decent engine, I don't know. IMO, 90-100 is good, 80 questionable. Others will have different opinions.
